Otter and Bear by Illahie Otter and Bear by Illahie
This piece comes from a tattoo commission. With the first design (this one), I misread some of the commissioners wishes, and flipped things around the wrong way. The second try was dead on however, and the commissioner was very pleased with the outcome.

I didn't want the first design to go unseen, as I'm quiet fond of it meself. I gave it a touch of colour in Photoshop, and voila!

Otter, Bear and English ivy

Would it be ok if I used the otter on a family crest?

Oh my .... I like it very much and the ironic thing is: Me and my boyfriend plan to marry next year. He is Bear and I´m otter as celtic birth sign and I hope, I can use your art for the invitations. It´s just private use. Is it possible?

I didn't know you actually took on this commission - have been very out of the loop, evidently ;)

The only thing that I can comment on is the balance issue that you faced putting the otter and bear in direct opposition to each other. It would be challenging to get them to have the same visual weight, so I think you've handled it well.

Thanks sis! Yeah, the balance thing was a issue. I didn't want to make the otter and the bear the same size, but this left a tiny obstacle in the designing process. Either way, I'm rather pleased with the outcome

So, what's the finished and correct commission look like, eh? Also; you and Cáit *need* to get drunk together in Donegal this spring. And if we're all lucky, I'll be in Galway for the Arts Festival this July ;)

The finished commission is both characters flipped, and fitted around the lucky guy's excisting tattoo of a shamrock. The ivy band will serve as a filled inbetween the animals, and to top it all off is the same band pattern that was already found on the arm.

And I don't just NEED to meet up with her, I just HAVE to! Otherwise I won't be able to die happy!

And you..... just for the arts festival? What happening with your other plans at the moment? Or are those still being discussed?

Oh -- if I get there for the Fetsival it means I'll also be at Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain for a month...which'd be beyond all awesomeness. And then I'd be staying a little longer to try and talk to a couple glass artists I know, in hopes of finding someone who might need a lackey in exchange for sponsoring this Texan for a work visa. Yo.

Got your mind set on the Republic? I'm sure there are some glass artists in Ulster willing to kill for someone as talented as yours.

Either way... I except you to pop up in Ulster.. or atleast meet up somewhere along the way!

Not set, per se...but I do want to live and work in the Gaeltacht. I don't imagine I'll find a studio there, though (which is why I've got to become bilingual and start one). However, while I do have the tiniest bit of talent, I've got zero skills...if there's an Ulster studio willing to teach, I'm there. ;)

And yes, there will be an Ulster outing in search of Ingrid.

Good good :) And hey, althought Ulster isn't listed as a Gaeltacht area there are whole communities inside cities that speak it. Twas their weapon afterall.

Be sure to sift through [link] just in case as well. Who knows what you may find :)

As for meeting up, you got it! Looking forward to sharing a drink with you!
