Gadhar stoic Astralach Torc by Illahie Gadhar stoic Astralach Torc by Illahie
Gadhar stoic Astrálach - Australian cattle dog

This torc features two stylized Australian cattle dogs modelled after Bella and Conan. The 24kt gold accenting roughly matches the brown/copper fur patterning of the real dogs.

Bella features gold face with a white (silver) muzzle, ears and blaze on top of her head. Conan features a mostly silver head with the lower parts accented with gold. Conan also has two gold 'dots' above the eyes. The eyes are also gold.

Body braid for this torc is made out of noble steel, to ensure strength and durability. The terminals are fine (99.9% pure) silver.

Do you have a website, with Torcs for sale or is it all commission? These are lovely!

Another great one! I'm so jealous...I'd love to make stuff like this with my designs, but I've no idea where to start!

The best way to go about it is to just try. I had no idea before I started working on these either.. but museums that have broken torcs on display are such a treat to look and learn how they were constructed :)

Your skill is absolutely stunning! The celtic design is gorgeous and adds a very lovely mythical feel to the piece as it always does. The heads are crafted quite well, and the design itself is beautiful. The lucky person who received this I am sure is as astounded as I am. Beautiful!

I was especially impressed with this torc being a tribute to his own dogs. I thought it was a lovely idea :)

I was just curious, what are your prices generally when it comes to torcs? Or does it depend on the detail involved, etc.?

It does depend on the detail involved, but I'll send you a wee note with some details :)

Illahie,
Wonderful work (as usual).
This may sound odd but I've never heard the designation "noble steel"and found no metallurgical definition doing a Google search...Is this perhaps a U.K. title for stainless steel? or a high nickel steel(one that won't rust)?
The braid pattern is awesome and so EVEN...
Is that something you covet or would you be willing to share the technique, like in a tutorial?
I've been thinking about doing the same ,with some of the thicker forged gauges just so the pattern is easier to see...

It's a term used over here and elsewhere in Europe when it concerns stainless steel used in jewellery. Because the term stainless steel reminds people of cutlery and other inexpensive materials and items it often completely devalues an artistic use of the metal. Therefor, for jewellery and art purposed the term 'noble steel' is used :)

:D Many thanks! They are great pieces of jewellery aren't they? Plus, when they 'warm up', they seem to become part of the wearer, and you don't even notice you're wearing them the best of times!

The Frecklehound, you've done my Frecklehound *grins*... well, he's half Heeler and half Kelpie and has lots of red spots and chases eveything that runs.

Beautiful work, here. I didn't know the different metals could be combined like that, on such small models with such clear delineation. It really does bring out the beauty and personalization of their faces.

The noses might be a little too blunted and square at the end, but I admit I'm basing this on our own cattle dog, so that could just be differences in the dogs. Even so, they're very lovely, and the gentle curves and round heads capture the sweetness of the dog well.

Amusingly, despite being from Australia, cattle dogs and herders in general are very appropriate subjects for a torc. The circle of the torc kind of reflects the way they circle around herd animals, and can also reflect the loyalty and "possessiveness" they hold over their owner. Cattle dogs in particular have a keen intelligence and bravery about them, as well as a seemingly high tolerance of pain and injury, that Celtic warriors could possibly have found relation with. When you combine that with the importance of cattle held by the Celts (the Irish ones, at least), cattle dogs might have been held in high regard, were they around at the time.

Ahh, thank you. Sadly, I can't see it. :C Or I don't know how to see it... I found the picture on your page, though, and your pictures of Conan. What handsome dogs. Bella looks like such a sweetie.

And it looks like the muzzle is a little heavier on them than on our dog, so I'll have to take back that part of my comment.

yeah, I don't think the embedded thumbnails work in comments, which is somehting I'll have to remember.

She and conan are both lovely dogs, though Bella can be a little rotten and has a great need to take whatever conan has away from him, but he is very patient and well behaved for the most part.

you couldn't ask for a better companion and an Australian cattle dog or 2. I was surprised to find out that they are as widespread and as popular in the US as they are.

How much would a torc like that cost? I was thinking of getting one but having the eyes be little gems like in another torc I saw you did. (both are GORGEOUS and I love the craftsmanship)
